Bulls are what we produce and sell and we will usually have young bulls available. Depending on time of year and demand, they range from 8 and up to 18-20 months of age. However, a large number of our bulls are sold at or soon after weaning. We pen them up and the buyers come and pick out what they like. Selling them this way saves us the expense of feeding and growing them out and allows us to sell at lower prices. Of course the buyers are taking a gamble since they have not seen the grown animal. But they can look at the pedigree and look at the calf and his performance--we always have that available (birth+weaning weights). And we have a reputation to protect in selling them this way. Over all these years, no one has brought back a bull and told us he did not work out. We have an established group of buyers who come when we tell them we have weaned our calves. If you would like to be called/notified when we wean speak with Lester. We wean twice a year and 50-60% will be sired by AI bulls. We search the world all over for AL sires we can use and fortunately there are AL studs in the U.S. and Canada that facilitate that search. Our clean up sires are bulls we have raised ourselves and retained for just clean up purposes. They sire the rest of our calves. We usually wean our fall born calves in late June to late July--depending on availability of rain and oat pasture to graze. Our fall born calves are consistently the heaviest at weaning and have remained so year after year. Our spring born calves are usually weaned in October--but that varies more, depending the condition of our summer pastures. The quality of the calves is the same, 50-60% AI sired, but the weaning weights are lighter because the forage situation is different. We will often have heifers, bred and open. Sometimes we will have bred cows and pairs. But not often. Check with Lester if that is what you are needing.
